8 Ways to Give Feedback

8 Ways to Give Feedback in Appropriate Doses
Do you spend more time grading or lesson planning?
Dylan Wiliam, the educator/researcher who is credited with recognizing the value of formative assessment, recommends that teachers spend twice as much time planning as they do assessing and grading. He expands on this by suggesting that we provide detailed feedback on one-quarter of work and provide quick feedback on another quarter.
So what about the other half? His recommendation is that students provide peer-to-peer feedback on one-quarter of the assignments and self-assess the remaining quarter.
Here are a couple of other suggestions from Wiliam:
  1. Feedback has to use what we know about our students’ capabilities from their past work to improve their future work.
  2. Don’t give feedback unless you allocated class time for students to respond.
  3. If it’s worth giving the feedback, it’s worth taking instructional time to ensure students respond.
  4. Feedback should be linking to the learning intentions and success criteria only.
  5. Feedback should mean more work for the recipient than the donor.
  6. Never grade students while they are still learning something.
  7. Blur the line between feedback and teaching.
  8. Shift from giving grades to giving feedback.

Need to Knows: Friday is SpeakUp Survey
On Friday we will participate in the required SpeakUp Survey.
Directions are here . I will also send these to the students and have them posted on our webpage.
This survey consists of 30 questions but many of the questions have (check all that apply) and consist of more than a dozen choices.
Because of this, it is recommended that:
  1. Supports like Snap-and-Read, small group, etc. are used
  2. The survey is given first thing in 1A which will be extended (no club/activity period)
  3. Check for student completion.
Students can skip questions.
In the past this is a survey that we have had to give two times per year because of low participation the first time.
There is a teacher survey that you are encouraged to take.
Schedule below.

Shout Outs
Woo! Woo! Great job by  Corey Hunt for his organization and efforts with the dodgeball tournament, which raised over $200 for Help Save the Girl. Also a nod to our teachers (Ashae Bush, Meghan Streit, Paul Shepherd, Hank Atkins), Officer Scopelliti, and Adam Southall for their participation...and yeah, Adam’s team won!
