Excellence in Education: Helping Students When They're Not OK
Pardon me for getting personal...if you don't like this type of thing, just skip to the next section. Last week, a former student was arrested for being a heroin dealer and a later in the week another former student, who was also a neighbor and who's sister played basketball for me, died of an overdose.
We've all had days or weeks like that, but as I reflected, I realized how fortunate I am to have friends to seek out in traumatic times. Through exercise, cooking, and eating out, I can get through most tough times.
But then I thought about our students.
These events, were by no means, life-altering for me, and I can manage smaller setbacks like a flat tire or an argument with a peer with relative ease.
Thinking about our students, who often haven't learned to manage their setbacks or traumatic experiences, what can we do to help them.
How do we provide for them when they're not OK?
Do we have safe places in our classrooms? Our school?
Do we provide them with routines that they can expect?
How do we communicate that we care? That they are safe?
Do we truly embrace our students?

Please use this link to submit Grade Change Forms online. If you have any questions about the form, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Please
understand that if you change a grade in one term, it more than likely
affected another term. Example, if a grade changes in the Q2 category,
it will also affect the T2 grade. I will need all of the grade changes
to be submitted. These changes can be made to a single form. Please make
sure to indicate which term you are changing.

This is the 2nd part of a brief climate survey. Also students who did not complete the state climate survey (were absent) will be required to complete it. The climate survey consists of 4 questions plus some demographic questions. More information regarding the state survey redo will be forthcoming.

Students, today we are asking you to complete a school climate survey. The data from the survey will be used as part of our school improvement plan to measure how we are meeting the needs of our students and to help us improve. Your voice is important.
