Closed Captions to Google Slides

Excellence in Education: Adding Closed Captions to Google Slides
In October Google rolled out live closed captioning for Google Slides as part of Accessibility month.
It’s a great feature for:
  • English language learners
  • Students who have trouble hearing
  • Students who process information better visually than verbally
  • And it probably also will help us realize how much we talk (whenever I watched videos of my class, I was always amazed/dismayed how much time I spent talking).
How’s it work?
  1. Hit present and presenter view.

Click on Closed Captions or Ctrl + Shift + c
Give Google permission to access your microphone.
  1.
  2. Talk and present!
Other Tidbits
  • This could also be handy to use in creating screencasts which then record the spoken word and the closed captions.
  • You do have to be pretty close to the microphone for this to work.
  • I learned that Microsoft/PowerPoint has a more robust closed captioning and translator feature. Learn about it here . It’s pretty darn awesome!
Need to Knows: Culturally Responsive Teaching Meetings on Thursday
Please be respectful of everyone’s time by arriving on time and having read Chapter 2. Please be prepared to discuss:
  1. Where do you identify on the spectrum from individualist to collectivist?  How does this impact how you plan lessons and activities for your classroom?  How can you be inclusive to all students?
  2. Create a cultural map (pg. 24). Think about one aspect from your superficial, shallow, and deep culture.  How does this impact your teaching?
  3. How do shallow cultural connections show up as rapport with your students?  Where do opportunities lie to begin with shallow cultural rapport and go deeper?
Need to Knows: Staff Social
Our staff social at Timberwood Tap House will be on December 4 beginning at 4:30. So that we may order the appropriate amount of food, please RSVP if you are attending by this Friday. Please feel free to invite your significant other.
Important Information
Midterm Exam Schedule Below
December 5: Curriculum Expo
Field Trips and SOLs
November 30: Theater and Cale
Stat of the Week: Reading at Risk
Over the past 20 years, young adults (18-34) have declined from the group most likely to read literature to the group least likely (with the exception of the age 65 and above group).
The rate of decline for the youngest adults (18-24) is 55 percent greater than that of the total adult population (-28 percent vs. -18 percent).
I shared this with our students in an email to them. To me, it speaks to the challenges we face and the importance of what we do.
What do you make of it? What can/should we do?
