Excellence in Education: Color-Coded Feedback
If you've used this, I'd love to hear more about it. If you haven't give it a shot and see what the students think about it as a feedback technique.
I’ve seen this technique used in both teacher-student feedback and student-student feedback.
Using a highlighter, different color pens/pencils, or different color stick notes, the “assessor” can use red for areas that need major improvement, yellow where some improvement is needed, green where the criteria has been met or is interesting. The technique is easily adapted to Google or Blackboard.
Another means of use:
- Students highlight examples of a predefined feature whenever it occurs. For example, if you were working with students on thesis statements or topic sentences, you could have students highlight the thesis statement and you could take it to the next level by having students color-code them based on pre-established criteria. Next, you could have students work in groups to choose the best example and share why with their peers.
- Another means of using color is to assign colors to various categories/classifications. For example, green might be used for word choice, red for organization, and purple for content.
- I also read a blog where the teacher used the colors differently and he didn't tell students what the colors meant. It was up to them to decipher what each color meant.
Why it works?
- Color increases the focus of students
- Color leaves a vivid impression of what is good and what needs work
- It's efficient and requires students to peer and self-evaluate
- After receiving the color-coded feedback, the student must determine what to do to improve his/her work. Of course, some students may need more assistance than others.
- You can make use of flexible grouping to ensure students continue to work with each other to improve. One way of doing this would be to group a struggling student with a student who is close to mastery. Another strategy would be to group students who have similar weaknesses together and work with them in groups or provide them with directions.
- Many students struggle with peer editing; this process makes it easier and less threatening.
Need to Knows
We've recently had an increase in number of students in the hallways towards the end of classes, especially 4th period. We have discussed this matter with some of you already, but please be mindful of this as this poses several problems. Most importantly, as educators, we know that our time is limited and each minute matters.
As you probably know, we have a committee that is looking into ways to improve Mustang Morning. We will be distributing a survey later this week for all teachers to complete for that day's Mustang Morning. The data collected from this survey will assist us in understanding how Mustang Morning is being used and how we would like it to be used.

Prom
will be here on Saturday, April 14 at Fry’s Spring Beach Club from
8-11pm. We are in search of chaperones to help out with this big
event. If you are able to volunteer some time it would be greatly
appreciated! It’s always a lot of fun to see the kids dressed up and
they look forward to seeing their teachers too.
We need chaperones for 1st shift (8-9:30pm) and 2nd shift
(9:30-11pm). If you could email Ms. Stott which shift you’d like, as
well as any task preference (ticket check in, dance floor supervision,
or side room supervision), she will do her best to assign you to your
preference (first come first serve!).
March 27: No Mustang Morning/Survey Completion.
This is the 2nd part of a brief climate survey. Also students who did not complete the state climate survey (were absent) will be required to complete it. The climate survey consists of 4 questions plus some demographic questions. More information regarding the state survey redo will be forthcoming.

Changes to Google Drive/Sync:
This announcement is directed to users of Google Drive for MAC/PC to
backup files from your computer to Google Drive. GSuite for Education
has announced that Google Drive for Mac/PC will no longer be available
after May 12th, 2018. Google Drive for Mac/PC is the application that
syncs your Google Drive between the web and your computer. This change does not impact the files that you have in Google Drive on the Internet. The Learning Technologies team recommends teachers and students using the Google Drive application switch to Backup and Sync by Google.
Backup and Sync will behave in the same way that the Google Drive
application does in syncing your files between the web and your computer
with improved functionality.
LEAD recommends ignoring the popup below and instead downloading Backup and Sync by Google.
The transition will be simple by completing the following steps.
1. Download and install Backup and Sync by Google.
2. After installation, restart your computer.
3. After restarting, setup will run automatically all of your files will be synced just like they were before.
