Excellence in Education: Pre-Conferencing or Checking In with Students
For most of my student life, I was shy to the extreme. I lacked confidence. Even when a teacher asked me a question I knew the answer to, I wouldn't answer. Had a teacher used pre-conferencing with me, I may have been emotionally primed and ready to answer.
As a teacher, I knew there were learning activities that were going to be difficult, if not impossible, for some students--not because of cognitive deficits but for behavioral or social reasons. My plan was to get students started and then to work individually with these students, but often, it took me too long to get to them and the student had already given up.
Pre-conferencing, a strategy I learned from a school psychologist I worked with in Fauquier County, would have greatly benefited me as a student and as a teacher.
Here's how it works:
Before getting to the assignment that may cause difficulty for a student, pre-conference with them. Most often this might be as you greet the student when he/she enters the classroom, but it can also occur during class before getting to the barrier assignment.
What does it look like?
For a shy student like me, I would've benefited from a teacher offering positive encouragement while holding me accountable. Reed, You have a lot to contribute to our class. I'm going to call on you during our discussion of the balcony scene (in Romeo and Juliet). What do you think you might say? The latter might occur later in class after giving me some time to prepare an answer.
For a student who struggles in working with others, a pre-conference might look like this. Reed, you did a nice job of yesterday at staying on task during the individual work. Today, you're going to be working with your group. What is it that you need to do to be an effective partner in your group?
For a student who needs help managing his distractions, you may pre-conference with her by saying, Let's look at how we can ensure you're on task today. What's a good goal for you today? Student: I'm going to stay in my seat for the class, unless you give me permission.
In all of the above scenarios, the pre-conference has created a shared expectation. Providing feedback to the student becomes easier in such a scenario and by having the conversation at the beginning of class, you're avoiding conflict and embarrassment.

Need to Knows
Prom will be here on Saturday April 14 at Fry’s Spring Beach Club from 8-11pm. We are in search of chaperones to help out with this big event. If you are able to volunteer some time it would be greatly appreciated! It’s always a lot of fun to see the kids dressed up and they look forward to seeing their teachers too.
We need chaperones for 1st shift (8-9:30pm) and 2nd shift (9:30-11pm). If you could email Ms. Stott which shift you’d like, as well as any task preference (ticket check in, dance floor supervision, or side room supervision), she will do her best to assign you to your preference (first come first serve!).

Changes to Google Drive/Sync: This announcement is directed to users of Google Drive for MAC/PC to backup files from your computer to Google Drive. GSuite for Education has announced that Google Drive for Mac/PC will no longer be available after May 12th, 2018. Google Drive for Mac/PC is the application that syncs your Google Drive between the web and your computer. This change does not impact the files that you have in Google Drive on the Internet. The Learning Technologies team recommends teachers and students using the Google Drive application switch to Backup and Sync by Google. Backup and Sync will behave in the same way that the Google Drive application does in syncing your files between the web and your computer with improved functionality.
LEAD recommends ignoring the popup below and instead downloading Backup and Sync by Google.
The transition will be simple by completing the following steps.
1. Download and install Backup and Sync by Google.
2. After installation, restart your computer.
3. After restarting, setup will run automatically all of your files will be synced just like they were before.
