Excellence in Education: Thank You
Education is a tough job. The hours are long; the pay isn't great. The frustrations are many. And, the thanks are too infrequent.
We entered education for different reasons. Some of us entered the profession because one of our own teachers, counselors, or coaches made such a difference in our lives. For others it might have been the exact opposite and the desire to do better, and for some it might be a passion for a subject matter and wanting to share that passion with student. What is clear, is none of us entered education solely to ensure our students pass an end-of-course test.
Teaching--and I believe we are all teachers--is one of the most important roles in American society. We should feel pride in our profession. We are dedicated, hard-working, compassionate experts who are invested in the lives of our students. In what other profession do people have the ability to positively influence the lives of so many?
I appreciate each of you. Every child should have the opportunity to receive the best education available, and while we might not be perfect, I am proud to work with you and we should all be proud to be Mustangs. Your efforts are the foundation of our students' futures. Together, we are paving a road of learning, growth, promise and hope.
Thank you for all you do for our students and for each other. Have a great Thanksgiving and be sure to take some time for yourself.
Excellence in Education: CORBS Feedback
CORBS is an acronym for how to provide effective feedback (Hawkins and Shohets, 1989)
Clear: Simple, specific and straight as opposed to vague, complex or confusing
Owned: Describe how it made you feel and use language such as “I found…” or “I felt…” making feedback your own perception and not as an ultimate truth.
Regular: Try to give feedback as early as possible so that the person has time to do something about it
Balanced: Balance the positives with the negatives
Specific: Feedback should be based on observable behaviors and specific situations that can be modified. General feedback is difficult for the learner to use, so attempt to be specific and give examples.

When looking at overall scores in regards to the prevalence of bullying and teasing: Monticello scores 11.25 on student ratings and a 9.75 on teacher ratings.
Scores between 9 and 11 are within 1 standard deviation of the state mean. Scores above 11 are more than 1 standard deviation above the state mean in a favorable direction and scores below 9 are more than 1 standard deviation below the state mean.
